John M. LaFear

John LaFearJohn retired after over 24 years of service as a Special Agent with Department of Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI). He held various management positions including Director of Advanced Training at CI's National Training Academy.

John began with The Internal Revenue Service in the fall of 1972 as a Special Agent with the Criminal Investigation Division. He received extensive classroom training (about 26 weeks) in investigating financial crimes, and on the job training each year while on the job (24 years).

Throughout his professional career, John was involved first in working and managing large scale narcotics/money laundering investigations and then in the training and development of training for all types of financial crimes, including money laundering. He designed and implemented the first money laundering course offered to law enforcement after the enactment of the money laundering statue in 1986. He was assigned to the Dept of Treasury’s Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) for 3 years to assist in setting up their Financial Fraud Institute (FFI). While at FFI, he was responsible for developing domestic and international training programs relating to money laundering and financial crimes investigations.

John was the first Director Advance Training at IRS-CI’s training academy. He created and established an entire advanced training program, with a focus on money laundering and forensic computer training for senior investigators.

He served as a representative to INTERPOL for one year and was responsible for international money laundering investigations, international white collar crimes, and the development of training initiatives for international money laundering.

He is currently in the 13th year of operation and has conducted over 475 classes and trained over 14,000 laws enforcement personnel and financial institution personnel from all over the United States, the Caribbean basin, Central America, and Africa.

John holds a B.S. degree in Accounting from Florida State University in Tallahassee Fl, where he graduated in May 1972.
